210 GSM tells you the weight of a fabric: about 210 grams per square metre. In kidswear, that usually points to a more substantial midweight feel than a very lightweight basic jersey. GSM is useful, but it is not a quality score and heavier does not automatically mean better.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures how much a square metre of fabric weighs. A simple way to picture it is paper: thin office paper and heavier card stock feel different partly because there is a different amount of material in the same area. Fabric GSM uses the same basic idea.
So what does 210 GSM feel like?
For Nimuki’s current co-ord range, 210 GSM was chosen to give the fabric noticeable body and a deliberately substantial, midweight feel. The aim was not to make the heaviest garment possible. It was to avoid a very thin, flimsy basic-jersey feel while keeping the finished co-ord comfortable and wearable.
That is why we describe the result as soft enough for them, substantial enough for you to feel the difference.
Is higher GSM always better?
No. GSM measures weight, not overall quality. The right fabric weight depends on what the garment is meant to do. A light summer layer, a T-shirt, a sweatshirt and a co-ord can all need different weights.
For us, the useful question is not “what is the biggest GSM number?” It is “does this weight help create the feel we wanted for this particular product?”
Why 210 GSM is only one part of the story
Fabric does not get its finished character from one number. Nimuki’s current co-ord fabric combines four decisions: 100% cotton, relatively fine 40s yarn, interlock construction and 210 GSM weight. The finished experience comes from how those choices work together.
In simple terms: cotton tells you what the fabric is made from; 40s tells you how fine the yarn is; interlock tells you how it is knitted; and 210 GSM tells you how much fabric weight sits in each square metre.
What should a parent actually remember?
You do not need to shop by textile specifications. GSM is most useful when a brand explains what the number was chosen to achieve. For Nimuki’s current co-ords, 210 GSM is the proof behind a more substantial midweight handfeel—not a claim that heavier fabric is universally better.
